The Beech Trees of Mont Gargan
Oil sketch on canvas board - 22cm x 27cm
Art Show of my recent oil sketches
Sunday, August 16, 2015 – Saint Gilles Les Forêts, 87130, France

Come to Saint Gilles Les Forêts to see the Mont Gargan Festival and to see my latest work! I have done quite a few oil sketches of the area like this one. You will find me in the town hall (la mairie) in the municipal council room.

You can find the beech trees you see in the painting above when you hike the trail from the parking lot leading up to the chapel on the top of Mont Gargan. They were planted between 1868 and 1869 - which explains why they have so much character.

Painting a sketch of these trees was a real pleasure because they have so many interesting curves and colours. I love trees that reach extremely old ages. They are works of art in themselves and are fascinating to look at. It's interesting to think of all the different times in history they have witnessed and, for me, I also find them emotionally moving.
